About Us

Click here for a recently developed powerpoint presentation about CCIHC.

Mission: The mission of CCIHC is to inspire and engage the people of Howard County Maryland to do what it truly takes to solve the climate crisis.

Audience: The audience is everyone who lives, works, or participates in activities in Howard County Maryland and through them their families, friends and colleagues.

Vision: CCIHC is a model for mobilizing the community to solve the climate crisis.

Goals:
  • Educate and motivate personal and community action by forming 12 Discussion Circles (approximately 100 people) this year on a variety of topics (Global Warming, Choices for Sustainable Living, Menu for the Future, Voluntary Simplicity, World of Health, etc.). We aim for a 30% growth in circles per year.

  • Develop a Howard County Advocacy Network of at least 30 advocates by the end of 2010 who are involved in calling, writing letters and office visits.

  • Investigate additional methods for Howard County residents to reduce their carbon footprint.

History:
CCIHC was formed in 2007 by a group of Howard County residents who are concerned about climate change.  We held our first organizing meeting on May 18, 2007 in Tim Sosinski's office.  About 20 people attended and 12 decided to join a four week discussion circle "Global Warming: Changing Course".  After 4 sessions and a potluck dinner, we decided to continue for another four weeks, using the book "Low Carbon Diet".  After another party ("Live Earth: 7/7/2007") we decided to launch our initiative.  While our initial focus was on starting additional discussion circles, we have branched out to other goals in our second and third years.  We are now a partner of HoLLIE (Howard County Legacy Leadership Institute) and the Howard County Earth Forum.  We have also added Advocacy as a focus of our efforts.
