EPA Mercury Regulation

Last summer we sent comments to the EPA via postcards, emails, petitions etc.  supporting draft regulator safeguards against mercury pollution from dirty power plants.   The comments were due August 8, 2011.  And we won!  EPA  released far-reaching air pollution regulations on December 21, 2011.   See USA today article here, and EPA statement here and Grist articles here and here.

But one step forward, a half  step backward.  In  July 2011 the EPA released regulations to reduce power plant pollution spoiling air downwind (a
Cross-State Air Pollution Rule)
This would shut down the oldest and dirtiest coal fired power plant operations (also of concern because they are a major source of mercury pollution.)  However on December 30, 2011 a Federal Court put the Cross-State Air Pollution regulations on hold.  See Washington Post article here  and EPA statement here.
